Robson Hall Legal Aid Clinic Celebrates 40th Anniversary

It began unspectacularly in the summer of 1970 with a couple of students, a supervisor and a tiny university grant. Its birth was forseen the previous year when Robert Carr (now Mr. Justice Robert Carr) approached Dean Cliff Edwards with the idea of starting something called the Legal Aid Clinic. Because at this time there was no provincial Legal Aid program, this university clinic on campus was “stand alone”, a first.

Pro Bono Students Canada Residential Schools Project

In 2006, under the coordination of Elizabeth McCandless and Calla Coughlan the Pro Bono Students Canada “Residential Schools Project” gave students the opportunity to visit First Nation communities throughout Manitoba to provide information regarding the Residential Schools Agreement.

International Development: One Student’s Perspective

Last year Katrina Broughton, a second year student who is passionate about human rights, social justice and women’s issues, flew to Bangladesh to learn about international development work and gather valuable international experience. Following that, she had planned to go to Togo in July and August, taking part in a human rights legal internship with the Human Rights Commission..
